SHERIDAN SUPPORT STAFF PREPARE TO STRIKE

For Immediate Release: August 25, 2008

Oakville, Ontario: Sheridan Support Staff are gearing up for a potential strike September 1st as the existing contract between Support Staff employed by Sheridan College and other colleges across the province expires Aug. 31.

On August 26th Local 245 members will gather to hold a Picket Painting & Protocol event. The purpose of the event is to show solidarity and support for their bargaining team and to inform the membership of some very important legal and safety related do's and don'ts on the picket line.

Local 245 had requested the use of Sheridan property to hold these events well in advance and after some delay Sheridan HR replied, “… the college is not prepared to allow the use of College property for this purpose."

Jay Jackson, OPSEU Local 245 President was surprised by the college’s response saying “This is the first time ever that the employer has denied OPSEU space on college property to hold union activities.”

These events will be held on public grounds outside the college campuses as follows:

Trafalgar Road campus, Oakville - August 26, 2008 12:00 - 2:00 p.m.
On the west side of Trafalgar Road by the northern most Sheridan sign

Davis campus, Brampton - August 26, 2008 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.
On the east side of McLaughlin Road by the main entrance

July 16th Support Staff province wide rejected management’s contract proposals and voted to give their bargaining team a strike mandate.
